The news: The Bartlett High School Band and Color Guard finished second overall at the Bands of America Middle Tennessee Regional Championship on Saturday night, Oct. 31, at Tucker Stadium on the Tennessee Tech campus in Cookeville.

How close was it? Very. Bartlett scored 91.000 in finals. Dobyns-Bennett High School of Kingsport won with 91.075, a margin of 0.075 points. Lambert High School of Georgia was third with 87.600.

The hardware: Bartlett won two of the three caption awards in finals: Outstanding Music Performance and Outstanding General Effect. Dobyns-Bennett took Outstanding Visual Performance.

Earlier in the day: In Saturday’s preliminary round, Bartlett placed first in Class AAAA and swept that class’s music, visual and general effect awards, which put it among the 14 bands that advanced to the evening finals.

The show: Bartlett’s 2026 production is called “A Neon Nation.” It’s built on American music, including William Schuman’s “Chester Overture,” “Shenandoah,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” Morton Gould’s “American Salute” and “The Story of Tonight” from Hamilton. The band is directed by Trevor Rundell, with drum majors Chloe Mayer and Sydney Sauls, according to the Bands of America program.

Neighbors in the field: Two other Shelby County bands also made finals. Arlington High finished ninth (84.100), and Collierville High finished 11th (82.800). The 14 finalists came from Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Ohio and Illinois.

Why it matters: Bands of America events are run by the nonprofit Music for All. Coming within 0.075 points of the top spot, in a field of bands from six states, made for a big Halloween night for the Panthers.
