The news: Good news if you’ve been thinking about adopting. The City of Bartlett Animal Shelter is back open, the city announced Tuesday, Oct. 27. The catch: the main building is off-limits for now.

Where to go: The shelter is at 5220 Shelter Run Lane. When you get there, go to the portable building, not the main building. “They are completely open for you to come, find your new best friend, and adopt,” the city posted on X.

What happened: Staff started moving into a temporary building next to the shelter on Oct. 22 so the main building could be repaired, and the shelter closed for several days during the move, according to the shelter’s Facebook announcements as reported by FOX13. At the time, the shelter said staff expected to be out of the main building for three to four weeks.

What’s still limited:

  • Intake. The city says intakes are “very limited” right now.
  • Owner surrenders. When the move started, the shelter said it would not take owner surrenders while out of the main building and would refer those requests to Adopt-a-Pet’s rehome service.

Found a stray? The shelter asks you to call it at 901-385-6484 and post the animal in the Lost and Found Pets of Bartlett group on Facebook. In most cases, it said, if you can hold onto a dog for a day or so, the owner will turn up.

Before you go: The city’s Animal Services page lists regular hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday. Since things are running out of a temporary building, it’s smart to call ahead.
